A Road trip in Brazil: From São Paulo up to Salvador, from 20th of December to 2nd of January
It has been nearly a week now while I’ve been back to SP, back at work, missing the sun and beaches and my dear friend Mari-Liis with whom we made this trip.
The trip indeed was more than just nice and memorable. It was a great insight to Brazilian culture and learnt us a lot. I will try to write down some highlights of it, but I even do not aim to cover all the unexpected and expected moments, happy and sad happenings we came across during this trip.
1st stop: Rio de Janeiro: known as a ‘marvelous city’ and for its beaches Copacabana and Ipanema, for its Christ this overlooks the whole city and enormous favelas (shantytowns). I suppose we just happened to be in Rio during the hottest times of a year (nearly 40 degrees) and didn’t stay long enough to discover its best parts. We visited the world famous sights and spend some time in beaches, but I for sure need to go back to discover its marvelous sideJ
2nd stop: Vittoria, a capital of Esperito Santo State: we had an incredible reception by some AIESEC members who showed us the best of their city. Thank you Larissa and Gabriel for this! For sure, Vittoria is a place to visit with its cute monastery just on the top of a mountain, a perfect view from Vila Velha to Vittoria, its beaches, and its people!
3rd stop: Porto Seguro, a small down there the Portuguese landed first in Brazil. For us it was just a 7 hours stopp over before catching another buss, but for any people in Brazil, Porto Seguro and its neighboring beaches are a great place to spend vacations. The historical Old Town was really small and cute! And the lime cake we had was just unexceptionally delicious!
4th and a final stop: Salvador, a capital of Bahia state. Salvador with its 3 million habitants is 3rd largest city in Brazil. Salvador is known as the African soul of Brazil, it I the darkest city in terms of skin color and the hottest in terms of culture. Nearly 90 % of its population are with African roots, cause Bahia state received the majority of African slaves brought to Brazil.
Indeed a hot place to be! Luckily there are several nice beaches to lye on a sand, listen to waves and drink Caipirinha ;P. Our favorite was Praia do Flamengo where we spent days chilling in Bungalow Brazil, where a good service, nice view overlooking the Atlantic, comfortable chairs for sunbathing and excellent music, made an enjoyable place to be. We also went to a boat trip on nearby islands and got terribly sun burnt; explored the Old Town and made shopping; wondered around in our nice neighborhoods called Barra and celebrated a crazy New Years’ Eve with many many locals on streets.
Thanks to some locals we got to know some places tourists will never go to, so cannot complain about the lack of activities.
On night of 2nd we took a plane back to SP, cause making a 32 hours bus trip all at once, was not appealing at all!
